Cocktail Party Catering Sydney
Food Your Guests Will Interrupt Their Own Conversations For
Smoked lobster and caviar cannoli. Kingfish tostadas with yuzu and native herbs. Duck pastrami cured in house over three days. Tuna tataki on hand-cut crackers with wasabi cream.
These are not reheated finger foods on a tray. Every canapé is built to make someone stop mid-sentence, look at what they just ate, and start scanning the room for the next tray.
A cocktail event is Grant King's playground. The same technique and obsession that earned him three chef hats at The Pier, a place on the San Pellegrino World's Top 100, and Gault and Millau Chef of the Year goes into something you eat in one bite. The format is smaller. The standard never drops.
What Is Cocktail Party Catering?
Cocktail party catering is food designed for a standing, mingling event built around drinks: small, shareable dishes guests can eat in one hand while holding a glass in the other. It usually combines roaming canapés carried through the room by staff, substantial "fork" bites for when guests need something more filling, and often a grazing or feasting station as a centrepiece. It is paired with a beverage programme and service staff who circulate, top up glasses and clear as they go.
Done badly, it is a tray of lukewarm arancini. Done properly, it is the most social, energetic and memorable way to feed a room.
How Should the Food Be Served?
Roaming canapés. Staff circulate with trays. This is the engine of a cocktail party: it keeps the room moving, keeps guests mingling, and means nobody is stuck queuing at a table. It also lets you control the pace, releasing courses through the evening so the energy builds rather than everyone eating at once.
Substantial fork bites. Around the middle of the event, when guests want something more, mini bowls and fork dishes land: seared tuna, slow-cooked pork belly, a small serving of something hot and generous. This is what stops people getting hungry and drifting home early.
A feasting or grazing station. A centrepiece table that anchors the room visually and gives guests somewhere to gather. Built from house-cured charcuterie, artisan Australian cheeses, house-made breads and seasonal produce, not supermarket platters.
Live cooking stations. For events that want theatre, a chef cooking in the room. Guests watch it happen, smell it, and eat it thirty seconds later. It changes the entire feel of a party.
Grant will recommend the right combination for your room, your numbers and the energy you want. He has run cocktail events from thirty guests in a Darling Point penthouse to three hundred on the harbour, and the format he chooses is always built around the room, never a package.
The Menu
Grant draws on a lifetime of international cooking to build canapé menus that move between Japanese precision, European technique, Middle Eastern warmth, Latin American brightness and contemporary Australian flavour. The menu changes with the seasons, and every ingredient is hand-sourced from the same farmers, fishermen and producers who supply his seated dinners and his fine dining work.
Nothing is bought in. Nothing is assembled from a catalogue. The duck pastrami is cured in house over three days because there is no shortcut that tastes as good.
Every dietary requirement is designed into the menu with the same creativity as everything else. Vegan, vegetarian, gluten free and allergen-specific guests get food built for them, never a sad plate assembled as an afterthought.
The Bar
Smile Catering is fully licensed. That means the entire beverage programme is handled: signature cocktails designed around your event, curated wines from independent Australian merchants, champagne, craft beer and thoughtful non-alcoholic options that are not an embarrassment.
For a three hour cocktail party, plan on 3 to 4 drinks per guest. Grant's team manages it all, so no one ever notices an empty glass.
The Service
Professional service staff experienced at the high end of Sydney's corporate and private event scene. They circulate, they read the room, they clear as they go, and they are invisible until the moment you need them.
Whether it is 30 guests in a Darling Point penthouse or 300 at a harbourside venue, the standard is identical. Seamless. Every glass full before anyone notices it was empty.
Perfect For
Corporate networking and client entertainment. Product launches and brand activations. Engagement parties and pre-wedding celebrations. Milestone birthdays and private celebrations. Gallery openings and fashion events. End of year and team parties. Harbourside and waterfront cocktail evenings.

Smile Catering is led by Grant King, one of the most awarded chefs in Australian history, with three chef hats, a San Pellegrino World's Top 100 ranking and Gault and Millau Chef of the Year. Grant designs and cooks canapés with the same technique that earned those accreditations, including smoked lobster and caviar cannoli and house-cured duck pastrami.
-
For a three hour cocktail party, 8 to 12 canapés per person is standard. For a one hour pre-dinner reception, 3 to 4 pieces. For a two hour event, 6 to 8. If the cocktail party replaces dinner entirely, plan on 12 to 15 pieces including substantial fork dishes. Time of day, drinking, and your guest demographic all shift these numbers, and Grant designs the count around your specific event.

Food is served by staff circulating with trays of roaming canapés, which keeps guests mingling rather than queuing. Substantial fork bites are released later in the event when guests want something more filling, and a grazing station or live cooking station can anchor the room. Releasing food in waves builds the energy of the party rather than everyone eating at once.
